Tinubu, Otti, Obasanjo Pay Glowing Tributes to Aguiyi-Ironsi at 60th Memorial, Reaffirm Commitment to Nigeria’s Unity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi as an outstanding professional soldier whose military career was marked by discipline, courage, loyalty and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

President Tinubu, who spoke at the 60th Memorial Anniversary of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, held at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, said the late military leader demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state.

Represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), the President described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriot whose life was dedicated to the service of Nigeria, noting that 60 years after his death, his name continues to occupy a prominent place in the nation’s history and evolution.

He said the Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity and strengthening the institutions that safeguard democracy, security and national development.

President Tinubu also appealed to the Abia State Government to consider constructing a Unity Square in honour of the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi.

In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to Abia State, as well as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former First Lady Dr Patience Jonathan for attending the memorial ceremony.

Governor Otti said the sacrifices made by the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi in the interest of Nigeria’s unity would never be in vain.

The Governor explained that he deliberately renamed the newly dualised Ossah–Abia Tower Road as Aguiyi-Ironsi Boulevard in honour of the late military leader, describing him as a detribalised Nigerian who stood firmly for the unity of the nation.

He used the occasion to urge leaders at all levels to prioritise service to the people over self-enrichment, noting that his administration is making significant investments in education, healthcare, arts, culture and other critical sectors.

Governor Otti further stated that Aguiyi-Ironsi gave his life for the unity and progress of Nigeria, urging serving military officers and all Nigerians to continue making sacrifices to preserve the country’s oneness.

Reflecting on his military career, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo recounted serving under General Aguiyi-Ironsi during the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo, where the late General became the first African Commander of the UN Force.

Chief Obasanjo described Aguiyi-Ironsi as an exceptional military leader who inspired younger officers through his professionalism, courage and exemplary leadership.

In her remarks, former First Lady Dr Patience Jonathan said the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi stood firmly for Nigeria’s unity and urged Nigerians to uphold the ideals he lived and died for. She also commended Governor Alex Otti for his landmark achievements across Abia State.

Dr Jonathan paid glowing tribute to Aguiyi-Ironsi’s widow, the late Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, for her resilience in raising their children after the tragic loss of her husband at a young age, adding that the family’s courage deserves national recognition.

In his address, former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd.), described the late Aguiyi-Ironsi as an outstanding military officer whose life embodied the core values of discipline, patriotism and selfless national service.

General Ihejirika said the late military leader’s legacy remains a model for younger generations and members of the Armed Forces. He also paid tribute to Aguiyi-Ironsi’s contributions to international peacekeeping operations, particularly in the Congo, where he earned global respect for Nigeria.

Earlier, speaking on behalf of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, Mr Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi described the late military leader as a patriotic and detribalised Nigerian whose life was devoted to national unity. He noted that the memorial was organised to celebrate a leader whose ideals remain relevant to Nigeria’s nation-building efforts.

The event attracted prominent Nigerians, including top military officers, heads of paramilitary agencies, members of the Abia State Executive Council, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other distinguished guests from across the country.
