BudgIT 2026 Report: Abia Ranks Among Nigeria’s Top-Performing States

Abia State has emerged as one of the top-performing states in Nigeria, according to the recently released 2026 BudgIT State of States Report, covering the period from 2017 to 2025, with notable improvements recorded in fiscal performance, healthcare, education, infrastructure and overall governance.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting.

Prince Kanu said the BudgIT 2026 Report ranked Abia first in total expenditure growth, first in capital expenditure growth, first in personnel expenditure growth, second in aggregate revenue growth and third in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) growth.

He said the performance reflected the state government’s prudent and strategic management of public resources.

The Commissioner noted that the BudgIT assessment was consistent with the findings of the Philips Consulting State Performance Index, which also identified Abia as one of the fastest-improving states in the country in its recent report.

Prince Kanu, however, stressed that the state government was more concerned with delivering tangible improvements in the lives of citizens than with competing or comparing itself with other states.
