LABOUR PARTY NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Labour party has elected its members of the National working committee through a successfully conducted 2026 elective convention with the Former Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Party, Senator Nenadi Usman and Chief Acho Obioma as National Chairman and national Secretary respectively.

The 2026 elective convention with the theme; “Labour party Rising: United For Victory” was chaired by the member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency Chief Ginger Onwusibe.

In his speech during the Elective National Convention held at the International Conference Center Ogurube layout Umuahia, the Governor, the national leader Dr Alex Otti commended the leadership of the Labour Party for successfully organising the peaceful convention, noting that the newly elected NWC members emerged through national inclusiveness and unity across the 6-geopolitical zones.

The Governor, urged the new national leaders to prioritise reconciliation, reintegrate aggrieved members and expand the party’s base through active engagement and electronic membership registration.

He described politics as a game of numbers, stressing that rebuilding trust among aggrieved members would be critical to the party’s success adding that engagement and a sense of recognition could go a long way in resolving many disputes.

The Governor who charged the new leadership of the party to organise credible and transparent primaries across all levels, from state assemblies to the presidency, thanked the Independent Electoral Commission, (INEC) for effectively monitoring the process.

In her acceptance remarks, the newly elected National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman pledged to provide inclusive leadership and strengthen party structures nationwide, assuring members of her commitment to transparency and collective decision-making.

She thanked members of the party for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to justify the trust reposed in her team, calling for unity and cooperation among party members to lead a formidable party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Presenting the State of affairs and annual report of the Labour party earlier, the former Interim National Secretary of the party, Sen. Darlington Nwokocha, said that the party’s transitional leadership stabilised its structures and repositioned it for future electoral success after overcoming a prolonged leadership and constitutional crisis.

In his remark, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Festus Osifo, represented by Dr Nuhu Toro, said that the convention marks a defining moment for both the party and Nigeria’s struggle for social and economic justice and called for a disciplined, ideologically driven political platform like the labor party to surmount prevailing crisis.

Similarly, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Joe Ajaero, represented by Mr Stephen Okoro, described the gathering as a critical point in the fight for economic liberation, urging members to remain steadfast ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Also speaking, Acting Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Mr Lawson Osagie, called on incoming leaders to prioritise unity and institutional stability.

Our government House correspondent Ezechukwu Adimoha reports that the 2026 Elective National Convention of the Labour Party featured the presentation of certificate of return to all the elected officials of the party and was attended by the deputy Governor Chief Ikechukwu Emetu, wife of the Governor Mrs Priscilla Otti,wife of the former Governor of Ondo State Dr Betty Akerodolu, officials of INEC and host of other party faithful.
