Gov Otti Commissions 80-Bed Chima Ubani General Hospital in Obingwa

ABIA – In a major step towards deepening healthcare services across the state, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned the newly retrofitted and digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital in Mgboko, Obingwa Local Government Area.

The Governor named the facility after the late former Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Comrade Chima Ubani, in recognition of his contributions to democracy, justice and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Otti described the late activist, who died in a road accident in 2005, as a courageous champion of democracy and justice.

He recalled Ubani’s role in campaigns against military dictatorship and repressive economic policies, noting that the pro-democracy activist died in pursuit of the ideals he stood for.

Governor Otti said the Chima Ubani General Hospital, Mgboko, would expand access to quality medical services for hundreds of thousands of residents in Obingwa and neighbouring communities.

He added that the hospital’s operations would combine modern technology with elements of the natural environment to create a conducive atmosphere for patients’ recovery.

In his remarks, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, noted that Governor Otti had embarked on several legacy projects across the state.

Abaribe expressed confidence that the people of Obingwa and Abia State would reciprocate the Governor’s efforts in the forthcoming general elections.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Ogbonnaya Uche, said the remodelled 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital represented the Otti administration’s commitment to building a modern, accessible and technology-driven healthcare system.

Professor Uche explained that the facility was equipped with telehealth technology that would enable health workers to connect patients, including pregnant women at primary healthcare centres, with specialists for early detection of complications and timely intervention.
He added that the technology would also enable Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora to support patient care within the locality.

In their separate remarks, the State Labour Party Chairman, Mr Peter Azubuike, and Eze Nwabiaraije Eneogwe, said Governor Otti had demonstrated that he does not discriminate against any section of the state.

They noted that the Governor’s purposeful leadership had restored their confidence in governance.

The Chima Ubani General Hospital, Mgboko, is equipped with modern medical technology, a world-class theatre, digital beds, advanced laboratory and diagnostic facilities, a healing garden and a renewable energy system.

The facility is expected to significantly strengthen access to quality secondary healthcare services for residents of Obingwa and surrounding communities.
