Abia Strengthens Measures to Prevent Ebola Outbreak, Launches Public Awareness Campaign
By Ezechukwu Adimoha
The Abia State Government has strengthened preventive measures to protect residents against the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) following the recent confirmation of an index case in the country.
Briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the State Ministry of Health had put in place appropriate preventive measures and protocols to prevent the disease from spreading within the state.
Prince Kanu explained that, as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s preparedness, the Ministry of Health had issued a Week 43 Health Advisory outlining control and preventive measures against Ebola, alongside plans to launch public awareness campaigns.
He disclosed that the Ministries of Health and Information had, over the weekend, participated in a meeting convened by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, to familiarise state governments with the Federal Government’s efforts to contain and manage the outbreak.
The Commissioner urged residents not to panic but to maintain good personal hygiene and take appropriate precautionary measures to minimise the risk of infection.
He added that the Ministries of Health and Information, in collaboration with the Abia State Orientation Agency, would embark on a joint public sensitisation campaign to educate residents about Ebola and the importance of observing preventive measures.
According to him, the campaign would complement the Ministry of Health’s advisory by providing residents with essential information on preventing the disease and promoting responsible health practices.
Prince Kanu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of residents through proactive preventive measures, effective public communication and sustained public enlightenment.
