The Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has flagged-off the 2026 Insecticide-Treated Nets campaign in Umuahia.
Governor Otti, represented by his Deputy, Chief Ikechukwu Emetu, said the event symbolizes a milestone in the collective determination of his administration to protect citizens against malaria, noting that malaria, which affects mainly children below five years, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups, is both preventable and treatable with the right interventions, sustained public awareness and active community participation.
He maintained that the insecticide-treated mosquito net is one of the most effective and accessible tools available, as it provides a barrier against mosquito bites and kills or repels mosquitoes that come into contact with the net.
The Governor also called for effective implementation and community participation, and urged healthcare workers, distribution teams, community volunteers and Local Government Officials to ensure that the distribution process is transparent, orderly and equitable.
In his remarks, the West and Central Africa Programme Directorate, Malaria Consortium Dr. Kolawole Maxwell, said the nets are free; adding that from the 26th of this month, about five thousand trained personnel, including Community Health Workers will go door to door for distributions and urged every household to collect the net, hang it and ensure their children sleep under it.
Our Government House Correspondent, Emelda Jibueze, reports, that the Commissioner for Health, Professor, Enoch Uche, National Coordinator, NMEP, Dr. Nnenna Ogbulafor, Representatives of the National and State Malaria Elimination Programmes, among others were present during the event
