Abia Govt set for Groundbreaking Ceremony of Propsed Federal Housing Authority Housing Estate

The state government says all is set for the groundbreaking ceremony of the proposed federal Housing Authority, Housing Estate,a joint project between the state government and the federal government in the state tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu who announced this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, said the ceremony will take place on Tuesday 21st April 2026 at the project site located along the Umuahia -Uzuakoli road by Dawis School.

He equally announced that the Umuahia Capital Development Authority is making frantic efforts to relocate traders at the isi gate area of Umuahia to the new relief market in Afara -Ibeku Umuahia.

The Information Commissioner said that the initiative is in line with the Urban Renewal agenda of the state government, noting that the compensation payments to landowners have been completed with perimeter fencing while the retailing wall is ongoing.

Prince Okey Kanu further disclosed that in other to rid the capital city centre, Isi Gate of street traders, the state government has concluded plans to relocate commercial vehicles from Okigwe Park to the ultra-modern bus terminal to be commissioned soon, while the traders will be relocated to the Okigwe Park pending the completion of the Afara market for public use.

He also announced that construction work at the Ultra-modern Umuahia bus terminal has reached 100 % ready for commissioning while all necessary supporting infrastructure for the successful operation of the Umuahia Green shuttle Bus service Scheme at the terminal is ready for use.

He noted that when fully operational, the new Umuahia Central Bus Terminal as well as the Abia Green shuttle service will place Umuahia among the leading cities in Nigeria.

Prince Kanu equally disclosed that the Greater Ohafia Development Authority, GODA has completed a number of projects that may be commissioned by Governor Alex Otti.

The Information Commissioner also informed that arrangements have reached an advanced stage for the construction of a new Umuahia train station, noting that the project is in line with the state government’s agenda to improve public transportation in the state.

Prince Kanu said that the construction of the new train station will be located side by side with the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, noting that the project includes the development of an urban railway corridor with retail activities that would boost business activities around the corridor while many access roads will be constructed to provide Greater access to the new train station and adjoining areas.

Responding to claims in some quarters that the housing project is solely a federal government project, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma explained that the project is a joint between the federal government and the state government, pointing out that the land was donated by the state government who also has more roles to play.
